Displacement by Gentrification in Portland, Oregon

This map uses table joins, spatial joins, field calculator, and SQL to identify populations vulnerable to housing displacement caused by gentrification in Multnomah County and Portland.

According to Portland State University researcher Dr. Lisa K. Bates, “Tracts designated as vulnerable have higher-than-average populations with characteristics that make resisting displacement more difficult: they are renters rather than homeowners, belong to communities of color, lack college degrees, and have lower incomes. These socioeconomic factors suggest displacement risk largely because they signal a reduced ability to withstand housing price increases caused by gentrification”. Considering this logic as the basis for completing my analysis, I used the US Census Bureau’s American Fact Finder as a source for relevant data.
